Growing & Maintaining That Pure Beaut Beard
Urban Tonic’s Five Effective, Everyday Tips
According to the Guinness World Records, the longest beard in recorded history measured a seriously impressive 17 feet and 6 inches.
Fast forward some 94 years…Beards (and caring for them) has come a long way.
These days, millions of men worldwide are screaming all things “I’M THE MAN!” through big, bold beards that brush against their belt buckles.
Amazon and Google are awash with Beard Care 101 Bibles and Death by Drab Text Blogs that spell out the stats, myths and legends behind achieving the perfect look for you.
Fact is…essential beard care is as complicated as brushing your teeth twice a day.
Staying true to our ‘say it how it is’ no-BS way of working, we’ve penned five effective, everyday tips for growing and maintaining that pure beaut beard you long for.
In no particular order…
#1 – Have a Wee Bitta Patience
If you’re expecting to wake up some morning with a head on you like Jason Momoa…think again.
That beard you’re dying to achieve is impossible without some common sense and self-restraint. Depending on how thick and fast your hair grows, keep in mind that during the first month or two of your beardyman quest, facial hair has zero hope of consistent growth if you go at it willy-nilly with all manner of barbering accoutrements.
If in doubt…keep growing it out.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. They’ll be plenty of time for trimming and taming.
#2 – Keep It Clean Hi
Take it from us. If you don’t keep it clean, you’ll end up looking like Worzel Gummidge.
It matters none if you have simple stubble or a full-blown Dusty from ZZ Top beard. Believe it or not, the hair on your face needs the same basic care that the hair on your head needs. Washing and conditioning your beard regularly…using products that aren’t shite…is essential for locking in moisture and keeping things healthy.
If you don’t wash it, trapped food and dead skin cells will leave you itchier than a child with Chickenpox. Keep things clean and avoid those dry, split ends that cause troublesome tangles and stunt beard growth.
#3 – Don’t Use Shite Beard Care Products
That beard balm you bought for less than a fiver in B&M Bargains might look great…but is it?
Using quality beard care products equals healthy, happy hair. We know that it can seem like a minefield when it comes to choosing the right products. Avoid like the plague beard balms, oils, scrubs and soaps that contain harsh ingredients like sulphates and silicones. Take the thirty seconds to read what’s in the products you’re interested in, before you put them in your basket.
When it comes to beard brushing, a 25p plastic comb will not suffice. Do your Googling and invest the few extra pound in a real man’s beard brush that suits the style you’re working on. Don’t buy a product just because it comes in a fancy tin with a flashy sticker.
Shite beard care products will in the long run leave your hair drier than Gandhi’s flip–flops.
#4 – Know What You’re Trimming and Taming
It’s easy to lift a razor or set of clippers and take chunks off your beard. DON’T!
Much like the hair on your head, beard hair has a mind of its own. Get into a daily routine of rubbing down your beard with quality products and a proper beard brush. It might take a whole two or three minutes – but it’ll help weed out stubborn hairs and train things to grow in a downward direction.
With the guidance of professionals in the game, choose a final style that walks hand-in-hand with the shape of your face. Sure, trimming and taming is essential for a well-groomed beard. That said, the second you shave it off, you can’t lift it off the floor and glue it back on. It’s gone until it grows back….often patchy.
Know what you’re cutting at before you attempt to cut it.
#5 – Communicate Regularly With Your Barber & Beard Product Plugs
There’s only so much you can do yourself when it comes to perfecting your appearance.
We may be in the thick of a nasty global pandemic but that doesn’t mean you can’t ask industry experts for their thoughts and help. A good barber will listen attentively (be it online or in person) to what you’re trying to achieve – and work with you to find the style that’s right for you. They’re your best friend when it comes to both stunted and bipolar beard growth.
The same can be said for those behind the beard products you buy and use daily. If they’re any way reputable and stand behind the products they spend money and massive man-hours bringing to market…they’ll be there for you when it comes to choosing the right products or offering free, shit-hot advice.
If your barber or beard product plugs are as useful as a chocolate kettle – tell them where to go.
